Hay fever and allergy relief from Jane Bence Homeopathy

It’s that time of year again for some people. As the weather warms up and flowers bloom, there’s a sense of excitement as we look forward to the longer days of summer and spending more time outside. However, for those who suffer from hay fever, the arrival of spring can bring discomfort and frustration. Characterized by sneezing, congestion and itchy eyes, hay fever can significantly impact one’s quality of life. While conventional treatments often involve antihistamines and decongestants, homeopathy offers a natural and holistic approach to managing hay fever symptoms. In this blog, we’ll explore how homeopathy can provide effective relief for spring hay fever.

What is Hay fever?

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is caused by an over-active immune system overreacting to pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. Plants release pollen containing proteins. When pollen particles enter the body, the immune system perceives them as threats and releases histamine, triggering inflammation to the mucous membranes and allergy symptoms. Common symptoms of hay fever include sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, coughing, and fatigue.

It affects up to 1 in 5 people at some point in their life. Anti-histamines mask the issue and are ok if you are happy to take them and if they work, but they don’t alter the underlying condition, (I offer homeopathic treatment the winter before your hay fever starts to reduce this).

I know how difficult hay fever is

I took antihistamines for hay fever during my teenage summers, (with my hay fever peaking at festivals) but they didn’t help, my eyes swelled up, and I felt exhausted. I resigned myself to suffering until I saw a homeopath. I talked to her in great detail about my hay fever and how it affected me physically and emotionally, what aggravated or improved my hay fever symptoms, what time of year it began, did anyone in my family have it as well. She gave me some homeopathic pills and my symptoms were steadily relieved.

As I experience hay fever I have tried and tested various products myself, so, below are some homeopathic and natural solutions to get you started on relieving your sneezing or itchy eyes that are worth giving a go:

Practical tips for easing discomfort

1. The hay fever season starts in February through to September. It can help to find out what particular pollens are triggering your hay fever and when. A pollen calendar can inform you. Take a look at:

https://www.asthma.org.uk/6e35b63b/globalassets/health-advice/asthma-triggers/pollencalendarfsv6.jpg

February – June is tree pollen. May – July is grass pollen. June – September is weed pollen.

2. Avoid pollen. Keep an eye on the pollen forecast so if it is high you can avoid going outside if possible. Unfortunately hay fever is higher in cities due to high pollution levels and hot weather makes pollution worse.

3. Reduce how much pollen comes into the home by washing hands and face after being outdoors, have a shower before bed. Avoid drying laundry outside. Wear wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes.

4. Manage stress as it can aggravate hay fever.

5. Keep and eye on your diet, before and during the season, increase raw fruit and veg and anti-inflammatory omega-3 oils. Caffeine, alcohol and sugary snacks can trigger histamine release, dairy can be mucous forming. (N.B Alcohol usually contains histamine).

Homeopathy and natural products to try

1. Herbs – Nettle, eyebright, elderflower infusion – antihistamine, soothing and calming to inflamed and itchy mucous membranes. Rooibos is caffeine free and can alleviate a runny nose. Peppermint tea can relieve nasal congestion. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory.

2. Supplements – Quercetin has antioxidant, antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin C and D support healthy immunity.

3. Switch to plant milks instead of dairy. But, live yogurt and kefir can support gut health/ immunity.

4. Homeopathy products: Helios Hayfever (Euphrasia/Allium cepa/Sabadilla) homeopathic remedy.

Dr Schuessler tissue salts combination H.

A.Vogel Pollinosan and Eyebright Eye Drops eye drops and soothing Weleda Rhinodoron nasal spray.

A good health food shop or chemist or https://naturaldispensary.co.uk/ should supply most of these except the Helios remedy available from https://www.helios.co.uk/en/shop/helios-hay-fever

Hay fever prevention

If you want to reduce the tendency to hay fever then you will require deeper-acting treatment in the autumn/winter and spring before the allergy season begins. I offer a homeopathic hay fever programme to de-sensitise allergies and I can also support you with homeopathy when you are in the throes of acute symptoms. You can enjoy your summers again!
